The University was founded as a Christian liberal arts college, in 1937, by George Pepperdine. In 1971, the university status was granted to Pepperdine, when the business department and the education department became separate schools, and the School of Law was added.
The original campus was relocated in 1972 in Malibu due to the fact that the South Central Los Angeles area, the location of the original campus of the university, was increasingly being crime-ridden and the campus faced the threat of being burned down by activists, in 1969.
On the 6th of September, 1972, the university opened its door to the first students of the Malibu area.
Pepperdine University is known today as being an independent, medium-sized university, with an 830-acre campus, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
The university is offering students a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs and major through its 5 distinct schools, being highly ranked by several important magazines, such as the Princeton Review and U.S. News & World Report, as well as the Peace Corps of America and the Fiske Guide to Colleges, appearing on the list of colleges with `Dorms Like Palaces` (Princeton Review) and among the top 100 law schools in the country (U.S. News and World Report).
The sports teams that are representing the university in the West Coast Conference are known as the Waves, the university being the only member of the Conference that is not Roman Catholic.
The university’s athletic program has been has been ranked as `the most successful athletic program for non-football Division I schools`, by the Sears Cup. There are 14 intercollegiate athletic teams, participating in the NCAA Division I, that are sponsored by Pepperdine University, covering sports areas such as basketball, tennis, baseball, volleyball, water polo, cross country and swimming.
